Hazard Primary and Special Education Unit was established to cater to the educational needs of children between the ages six to twelve years from the immediate and surrounding communities of Curatoe Hill, Sunny Side, Canaan Heights, New Bowens and Hazard Drive. The school began experiencing a significant growth in its student population in the early nineteen eighties when many families from some of the “Garrison Communities” in Kingston sought refuge at the Canaan Heights Squatter Settlement, one of the school’s nearest neighboring communities. Another significant growth in the student population came with the establishment of the Mineral Heights Housing Scheme in nineteen eighty-three (1983) and continues to do so.
