The History of the Runaway Bay All-Age School.

The Runaway Bay All- Age School began on Claremont Hill on a property owned by the United Church in Jamaica. It opened its doors to the first cohort of students in the nineteen thirties.

The principal was known as Teacher Green. The school opened with approximately fifty (50) students. In those days the curriculum was based on basic literacy and numeracy with a strong agricultural programme.

The institution was destroyed by an un-named hurricane in 1944. Due to the destruction of the school’s structure, students were housed temporarily at the Runaway Bay Tabernacle Church.

Property was later acquired and a new building was constructed to accommodate one hundred and fifty (150) students. Said building was erected in Derry, Runaway Bay, where the school is presently located.

With growth of the population and an increase in the demand for placement of students, an additional block was constructed in the early nineteen seventies to accommodate one hundred students. Another addition to the school’s physical structure was completed in 1980.

By the Turn of the century, the population outgrew the physical space and the administrators made the decision to implement a horizontal shift system.

Over time, it was realized that, the shift system did not allow for enough contact hours with students. To alleviate this problem, the school’s administrators partnered with stakeholders such as the P.T.A, corporate Jamaica and the Member of Parliament to create additional classroom space.

As such, September 01, 2014, the school returned to a full day schedule. It was an historic day for Runaway Bay All-Age, as the long awaited Infant Department opened its doors to its first cohort of students on said day.

The school has had many vibrant and innovative principals, namely Mr. Donald Christie, Mr. Ronald A. Titus, Ms. Glendaline L. Hemmings, Ms. Barbara E. Miles and Presently Mr. Lambert Pearson.

With a rich heritage and sound academic programmes, the school has been delivering quality education since it opened its doors. We have produced many professionals, intellectuals and skilled craftsmen who are making outstanding contributions to nation building.
