Ruth & her husband, Byron, have been coming to Jamacia for decades. As retirement approached, a meaningful project that was positive for Jamacia was desired. Goats! Everywhere! We explored the possibility of a goat dairy.
Ruth did a goat & cheese-making internship in Connecticut in 2014. And in the winter of 2014-15 a relationship with a Carey Park dairy goat breeder was built. He agreed ‘to just do a little experiment.’ A pilot program with first one goat, then two was begun. The experiment was a success! Ruby Goat Dairy was founded in 2015.
Ruby Goat Dairy is a micro-dairy where antibiotic use is kept to the barest minimum and hormones are not used. Herbal supplements are routinely included in the goats’ diets depending on their needs. Goats are a better environmentally-friendly milk producer. Goats thrive on less pasture than cows and require less space.
