THE INSTITUTE OF JAMAICA
MISSION
To enhance the awareness of our Jamaican cultural heritage; develop policies and manage programmes for the collection, research, preservation, protection, documentation, analysis, display and dissemination of our literature, science, history and material culture.
VISION
An organization sensitive to the educational needs of the Jamaican people consistent with the role as the primary institution dedicated to the preservation of Jamaica's cultural heritage.
DIVISIONS
The Institute of Jamaica (IOJ) has the responsibility for the management and operations of several organizations. These organizations / divisions (or units) have varying mandates that contributes to the overall mandate of the IOJ, which is “For the Encouragement of Literature, Science and Art”.
The main function of the IOJ, carried out by its divisions/units are:
- Establishing and managing museums and galleries for the collection, preservation and display of artefacts and art treasures;
- Maintaining and displaying Jamaica’s national fauna and flora collections;
- Documenting and disseminating information on the impact of the African presence in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean;
- Developing the creative potential of Jamaica’s children and youth;
- Researching, publishing and distributing information (especially those pertaining to Jamaica’s culture and heritage) of literacy, scientific, artistic and historical interest.
