Akan is a growing Track Club that aims to develop and produce World class male and female athletes.
Akan’s management model due to its size and developing structure is cautiously striving for growth. At present, the model comprises of a Head Coach, Assistant Coach, and Massage Therapist. Other informal affiliates are additional sports therapists and medical persons, whose services are provided based on needs. PUMA International has been the sole but not exclusive sponsor of the group.
There is a contingent of 15 male athletes between the ages of 19 and 27 years. These athletes have transitioned from their secondary school programs locally and regionally as well as from other clubs. Prime focus has been placed on 100, 200, 400, sprints and intermediate hurdles.
Akan Club’s growing credibility and popularity has been fueled by its consistent contribution to the Jamaican Athletics. Our athletes have been selected and competed at global, regional and international track and field championship meets. Some of these include IAAF World Championships, Commonwealth Games, Golden League and Diamond League competitions. Akan currently has athletes ranked in the IAAF World rankings in the 100m, 200m and 400m.
Our philosophy in athlete preparation is strongly influenced by speed development, speed endurance, special endurance, weight training/Olympic lifts, appropriate nutrition, the science of periodization, healthy lifestyle and a passion for the sport. The training environment is relaxed but disciplined to the task at hand. The application of the aforementioned has had major influences in forming the Akan culture, which emphasizes the realization of mutual goals and ambitions of everyone.
