Located in south western St. Elizabeth, Black River Hospital is situated on the western side of the town, facing the Caribbean Sea. The building has a historical background as it was first used as a barracks for soldiers in the olden days and then housed Munro College for boys. Except for the addition of a morgue, casualty department and a staff residence, the hospital has not had any major physical refurbishing. It now presents an aged structure of its buildings being protected by the Heritage Trust.

 

The Black River Hospital serves the population of St. Elizabeth, parts of St. James, Westmoreland and Manchester. It is a type “C” hospital () with a bed capacity of 60, bed complement of 97 and over one hundred percent occupancy. Black River Hospital is part of the Southern Regional Health Authority with its’ Regional Office in Mandeville, Manchester.

 

Black River Hospital receives referrals ftom Community Health Service, eg. Health centres and private doctors. Referring hospitals are:- Mandeville, Cornwall Regional, Kingston Public, University of the West Indies, Bustamante Children and National Chest Hospitals.

 

The hospital aims to offer high quality medical care which is accessible, acceptable, affordable and efficient.
