There is no doubt that the brain is one of the most essential organs in the human body. As an important part of your body’s communication and decision-making centre, the brain houses organs that play a key role in your memory, learning, creativity, language, emotional response, social interaction and planning ability. Naturally, therefore, most persons would want to do everything in their power to take care of their brains. Here are five tips that can help you to do just that.
1. Get some rest
Sleep is the brain’s best friend. Research has shown that the brain clears out toxins much more rapidly while we’re asleep, and that people who get more sleep can also think more clearly and function more effectively during their waking hours. People who get more sleep also seem to be.
2. Do some brainteasers
You heard right. Do some brainteasers. Brainteasers are called that for a reason. They have been proven to “boost overall brain activity; increase your memory power; reduce the risk, and slow the decline, of dementia; improve memory and brain processing speed; reduce boredom; and improve concentration”
3. Don’t worry
It’s more than a good line from a great Bob Marley song. It actually helps your brain when you choose to relax and stay calm instead of getting anxious and stressing about things. Science has shown that anxiety becomes a self-reinforcing malady when the brain remains in a constant state of apprehension, and triggers the body to react accordingly. This negatively affects your emotional well-being and your ability to function in everyday social settings. It has been proven that this makes persons more susceptible to mental disorders such as depression. Avoid this by identifying times when you feel anxious and actively resisting the urge to worry. Take Bob Marley’s advice: “Don’t worry about a thing, ’cause every little thing is gonna be alright.”
4. Eat healthy
How you eat has a direct influence on your brain. A poor diet can lead to mental disorders and neurdegenerative diseases. Plus, according to BrainFacts.org, the foods we eat affect our “cravings, our moods, and even our memories”. Most of us already know what foods are healthy, and which ones are not. We just don’t always eat what is best. Stick to vegetables, fruits, and have a balanced diet. It will not help your brain, as well as the rest of your body.
5. Get exercise
Physical exercise is excellent for the brain. It helps the brain make new cells and improves learning and memory (according to BrainFacts.org). It also helps to increase concentration and improves mental health generally. Science also shows that physical activity helps boost creativity in persons, and also slows down dementia and other forms of cognitive disorders.
