Export regulations for the medical cannabis industry are expected to be in place by the end of this year, Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Floyd Green has announced.
He revealed that drafting instruction for the export regulations is now with the Attorney General Chambers.
"As a government, we are developing a regulatory framework and we are introducing programmes which are focused on value-added products and services. We want the entire country to understand the possibilities that await us, especially when we work towards and show that our industry has structures and standards in place and is regulated to meet international guidelines and standards," Green said.
"Internationally, there is a steady movement towards scientific exploration, testing and acceptance of the many health benefits of cannabis and so, Jamaica sees those areas as highly beneficial and of top priority."
Green was delivering the main address at the grand opening of Environmentally Processing Inter-national Cannabis (EPICAN) Medicinals in Montego Bay last week
He heaped praises on Epican on their extension to Montego Bay.
"Epican has been successful in their Kingston outlet, and have now brought us here for the grand opening of another Herb House in what is Jamaica's largest tourist hub. This is a momentous occasion as we move rapidly toward the current sector trends and drive for economic growth in Jamaica,” Green said.
President of Epican, Dwayne McKenzie, stated that "we have been championing this case forever, not only in our culture but in our music and our representation".
"So at this particular point in time we really want people to pay more attention to who we are as a nation in terms of making life better," McKenzie said.
