KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Ministry of Transport and Mining says it is moving to implement a fare adjustment mechanism following numerous calls by several transport groups for a fare increase.
Consideration for this request will therefore be undertaken after the necessary preparatory work is completed for the implementation of the fare adjustment mechanism, the ministry said through the Transport Authority in a statement this afternoon.
Meanwhile, the Authority said that in honouring its commitment to improve the processing of Public Passenger Vehicle (PPV) badges, it is revamping the badge process and is currently exploring a number of training approaches which will improve the entire delivery of the PPV Driver Education programme offered to the sector.
The expected service level improvements include shorter processing time for renewal badges and the removal of the pre-test for the driver education programme, the Authority said.
In the same time, the Authority is maintaining that the fees charged by wreckers has been standardised and approved by the Authority for several years and its use of these wreckers is done in a systematic and transparent manner.
“Whilst the Authority admits that there is no fool proof system, the Authority's commitment to eliminating opportunities for corruption is obvious in a number of measures it has implemented including a Public Interaction Policy and a public education drive discouraging corrupt practices”.
The Authority said it therefore urging transport groups to report corrupt practices to those entities mandated, under law, to investigate same so that the necessary steps can be taken to rid the sector of dishonest activities.
